New game for Eat Sleep Play LTD - Fun Town

Name for the new brief -  Fun Town

How will it be marketed (marketing campaign):

Fun town will team up with a mobile advertising service to spread the word of the game through advertisements on popular apps such as Temple run or on Social network sites. Fun Town will be on different platforms such as the PC but will mainly be on the tablets, internet or mobile. This is because it is essential for a game with an open world to be on these platforms as these devices require less of a hassle to use than PlayStation or Xbox and can be taken with you everywhere (excluding the PC). Also, word of mouth will be an important way to spread Fun World to as many people as possible.

Five creative ways to promote the game to boys and girls ages 12-18:

1) School meeting - Set-up a school assembly and announce the game with interaction from the audience about the game.

2) In a fair - Set-up a small fair with games and wallpapers to be sold and won regarding the game.

3) Host an event - Host a local event with a demo of the game for consumers to try out.

4) Social Networking Sites - Teens at the age of 12-18 use a variety of social network sites such as Twitter or Facebook and even Tumblr!

5) Broadcast it on TV - Most teenagers are interested in Television so add an advertisement regarding Fun Town after things like EastEnders.

Successful game on internet, tablets or mobile phones - Angry Birds

Angry Birds
How were they promoted?

Angry Birds was initially promoted primarily through word-of-mouth. One player got
hooked and from there it moved on. Its promotion has taken on quite a dramatic turn lately. From Halloween costumes to birthday cakes, Angry Birds can be found everywhere now. It also tied-up with the animated movie RIO to develop a theme based game for the movie

How did Angry Birds make money?

There are ads in between levels on the free version. The free version does not give the full version of the application, so you need to pay a couple of pounds or less to get the full version. They are making lots of money out of the application as many people play it. Apple makes money by getting 20%-30% of the profit.

What is it that makes a mobile game a success?

Mobile games such as Angry Birds are successful through different ways. One way is through addiction. Angry Birds for example became popular through word of mouth as stated above and so people started being addicted to the game by either the competition of reaching higher then there friends or by the fun of tossing cute birds into pigs.

Another way an app is successful is by marketing it before it is developed! This way the consumers will have time to think about the game and see whether they would buy it or not.

Fifa 14 - Electronic Arts Promotional Campaign In Depth

Fifa 14 - Electronic Arts

Marketing:
Fifa 14 from EA games was marketed in a unique way as they struck a partnership with the mobile advertising service Mobsta to create a geo-technology campaign for the Fifa 14 game targeting football fans with stadium range on match days.

The campaign enabled advertising for the new Fifa game on iOS and Android devices. It works by using a ‘smart fence’ technology to identify smartphone users within three kilometres of football stadiums to target the relevant advertising.

Promotion (Pre-Release):
Fifa 14 promoted the game before it was released by the means of hosting events to attract the audience and leaving the thought of Fifa 14 in there mind. An example of an event hosted was at Gamescom where whoever won a few matches earned  a pack of Fifa 14 sleeves.

Also, Fifa 14 was discussed globally through the means of social network sites such as Twitter/Facebook where football fans could see small clips or adverts about Fifa 14 that announced new leagues (Irish for example) and championships that are added to the game.

Promotion (Post-Release):
After Fifa 14 was released, a launch party was hosted to celebrate the extraordinary game where Irish football fans around the country are given the opportunity to participate in the EA Sports Fifa 14 Airtricity League cover vote campaign. Some of the countries top football players from the Premier Division Teams have been included such as Luke Byrne.

On addition, after the games release, special FIFA 14 sleeves where released to be downloaded for free from the Xbox 360 and PlayStation stores which is somewhat like additional content for crazy football fans.

Notes:
Events were hosted after and before the release of the game.
EA sports partnered with Mobsta to market the game.
Exclusive League of Ireland featured in Fifa 14.
Social networks were buzzing about the critically acclaimed and best selling football franchise game Fifa.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Bethesda Promotional Campaign In Depth

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Bethesda

Marketing:
In the first 11 months of the campaign, Bethesda only released three video trailers. This is so people get 'hungry for more content' according to one of the marketers of the game. One key to getting marketing and development to work together is co-location. The developer, Bethesda Game Studios, and the publisher are located in the same building. This is so they can discuss there ideas faster and more often.

Here are adverts produced for Skyrim's marketing;

Promotion (Pre-Release):
Skyrim was promoted globally throughout the means of social media. Twitter, Facebook and other social websites such as Google+ went crazy with the people tweeting and posting about Skyrim. A Twitter page named 'SkyrimNews' had 39 million tweets related to it.

Also, events were hosted before the game was released at conventions where gamers can try demo's of the game or tasters. This gave a small hint of the game so they want to buy it. An event was hosted at Gamescom 2011 for example.

Promotion (Post-Release):
Even after the outstanding game Skyrim was released, there were still updates related to the game, whether sit from the games or the developers. For example, people on social networking kept posting stuff about the game that spread the word to people that did not know about Skyrim. This kept the sales to stay high for a while.

Furthermore, the developers after the game was released started working on DLC (Downloadable Content) which is additional game play to sprout the interest of other gamers that didn't buy the game and to extend the time of when people focused on Skyrim.

Notes:
Many adverts were made for the game as shown above.
There were pre and post release events/promotion.
The social media was filled with the idea of Skyrim for a while.
There were a few trailers at pre-release but when the game was close to coming out, the number of trailers rocketed up to attract gamers one last time so when Skyrim came out, there will be a fresh idea of the game in there head.

Here is a trailer of Skyrim;

Insidious: Chapter 2

Key conventions of the Film Poster

  • No name of any actors or actresses shown.
  • Image shows the main actress hugging her kids. This could be connoted to be either that there is a great deal of fear surrounding them or that she is worried to lose her children to something or someone. The kids expression suggest fear as he has his mouth open in most likely shock.
  • Title is in two colours. The SI coloured in red could be defined as 'see.' This creates fear as what is so important you need to see that it is written in the title.
  • Friday 13th of September release date.
  • Tagline 'It will take what you love most,' creates fear as things that you love most are the most precious to you.

Key conventions of the Film Trailer

  •  Trailer on the lines of 2 minutes.
  •  Tells you a brief outline of the horrors in the movie.
  •  Says other films made by the producer, such as SAW.
  •  Name of the actors shown (such as Patrick Wilson).
  • Main setting in the families house.
  • The victims are the family.
  • Horror music to create suspense on the audience to make them want to watch the movie.

The genre of Insidious: Chapter 2 is horror and thriller. The movie is set in America. It is the sequel to the famous movie Insidious. The target audience are most likely from the ages of 18-40. This is because the movie is too horrific for young teens or children.

White House Down

Key Conventions of the Film Poster
  • Channing Tatum, Jamie Foxx
  • Central Image shows action of some sort because of the crashed aeroplane in the back. The gun and the fire shows some sort of fighting. The two guys standing can mean lone survivors.
  • Title has bolded words which emphasise the meaning of the White House Down, meaning it has fallen or will fall.
  • Tagline (It all goes down) could mean that everything has an end.
  • June 20 release date.
  • Written other movies from the same director. (Independence day, The day after tomorrow and 2012.)

Key Conventions of the Film Trailer

  • Trailer slightly above 2 minutes.
  • The producer is mentioned and other previous movies he made, such as independence day.
  • The name of the film is shown in the trailer, with the names of the actors such as Channing Tatum.
  • Main setting in the White House building.
  • Allows the audience to relate to the main actors, the president (Jamie Foxx) and the bodyguard (Channing Tatum).
  • Action type music which increase the tension of the movie.
  • Tells you a brief outline of the plot.

The genre of the movie is action, drama and thriller. The movie is set in America in the White House building where dangerous events happen. The target audience will most likely be people between the ages of 18-35. This is because of the heavy action with the guns and the bombs that children will obviously not enjoy watching. The emotion between father and daughter can strike ages of mid thirties as they might enjoy action with a little bit of drama. The saying 'thirty is the new twenty' also emphasises this point. Furthermore, the film was promotionally successful because of the famous actors acting in the movie. Channing Tatum is extremely well-known and has many fans worldwide. Also, the poster convinces readers to watch this movie as there hasn't been a movie involving heavy action such as this for quite some time now.

Now You See Me

Key Conventions of Film Poster

  • Name of actors. (Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo)
  • Image showing some sort of illusion.
  • Title clearly seen from the image and at the bottom.
  • Tagline. (The closer you look, the less you'll see)
  • Production at the bottom blurb.
  • No release date shown, but coming soon.
  • No film franchise.

Key Conventions of a Film Trailer

  • The trailer clearly tells you who made the film at the end. They also tell you which company promoted it. (Lionsgate)
  • Trailer is between 1-2 minutes.
  • Tells the audience the name of the film, (Now You See Me) the actors performing but doesn't tell you when its release date, just tells you that its coming soon.
  • The main setting is on a stage.
  • Introduces all the main characters.
  • Powerful music in the background to create effect of tension and mystery.
  • Lines from the movie which have tension on the audience.
  • Tells you a bit of what the movie is about and shows you a trick or two to persuade the audience to watch the movie.

The genre of the film is crime, mystery and thriller. The target audience of the film are mostly teenagers to young adults as it involves acts of magic, crime where the police follow a group of teenagers which perform dangerous heists, and spontaneous action. The age group would probably be 14-30. I think that the film was promotionally successful as it had famous actors such as Woody Harrelson, the trailer was outstanding as it managed to catch the eye of millions of people, and the poster was professionally made.

Key conventions of Film Trailers and Posters

Film Trailers

  1. Tells you who made the film and often what the producers have made in the past.
  2. Typically, trailers are 1-2 minutes long.
  3. Gives the audience the name of the film, what (famous) actors are performing in the movie and the release date.
  4. Shows the audience where the main settings of the films are.
  5. Introduces the main characters to the audience and allows the audience to relate to them.
  6. Often have music playing in the background. The music is often associated with the genre.
  7. Brief outline of the film that makes the audience keen to watching the movie, by showing a selection of various action without revealing the ending.
  8. The main aim is to persuade the audience into wanting to go and watch the movie by giving slight information about the plot. They do this by showing comedic bits or action depending on the genre of the film.

Film Posters

  1. Shows the name of the actors/actress.
  2. Eye catching images.
  3. Title of film.
  4. Tagline.
  5. Critic review.
  6. Production blurb.
  7. Release date.
  8. Film franchise logo. (If there is one)

Summer Research Project

The game I researched is Dark Souls.

The genre of this game is - action/adventure.

Dark Souls is a role-playing game set in an open world environment. Dark Souls can be played on the PS3 and Xbox, later accessible through the PC. Dark Souls allows the player to control an undead  seeking humanity to regain his freedom. The plot is left for the player to figure out as it is one with mystery and surprises. The overall story of the game is that an undead (the player) will finally escape the northern undead asylum to see refuge in the Firelink Shrine. There the player meets a guide where he tells him to ring two bells, one up above and one down below.

The game takes place in the Kingdom of Lordran

In the back cover, there is a title saying "Prepare to Die" many people might think this is a joke but in reality, once a person starts playing the game, they will die over and over again, it is an extremely hard game with no options to ease the process. Play with caution!

(I know this is not English! Couldn't find English one!)

The game hit such a high rating that the makers of the game decided to release a DLC to the game (Downloadable Content). In other words, a new area and new bosses to discover!

Here is a picture of one of the new bosses and the cover of the DLC

File:Darksoulsbattle.jpg

The game targets those that are by the ages of 16-40. It has awesome game play and amazing graphics. This game is aimed to mostly males as they would prefer more action then females. The percentages will probably be; 75% Male 25% Female

The game makers are From Software in Japan. The game was published by Namco Bandai Games on PS3 and Xbox, later being accessible from the PC.

Dark Souls is also a sequel to the 2009 hit-game Demons Souls, overpowering it in rating!

The game was extremely successful as said before they made a DLC a year after, and now in 2014 they are making Dark Souls 2 on March!

Here is a trailer of Dark Souls, Dark Souls DLC and Dark Souls 2!

Analysing Photo's

This image starts off the mini-story with a wide shot showing the building where the story starts off.

This image is a high angle shot. It shows the beginning of the short story where the teacher is scolding the student for breaking the rules.

The student is upset after the Teacher scolds him for breaking the rules. This is a low angle shot.

This is a over-shoulder shot where the teacher scolds the teacher again for breaking the rules.

The student is running away after being told by the teacher. It is a long shot as it is showing the surroundings as well as the person.

This image is a medium shot . The meaning of this image is to show the student being bullied at school after he left the scolding of the teacher.

This image is off the student being bullied again behind school blocks. It is a medium close-up shot.

This is a close-up with the student crying after what happened. It is a shot showing his face in close.

After being told off by the teacher and bullied at school, the student decides to sit alone to read a book. This is an unusual perspective shot.

The student is being bullied by other student as he did something wrong. This is a medium shot showing the people from toe to head.

This final image is showing the end of the story where the student dies. This is a high shot as it used to show weakness.

Videogame Analysis (L.I.A.R)

Language:
The title in the back cover, and the image in the background are somewhat to do with surviving. The YOU in the title can be defined to target the buying audience, giving an effect of curiosity and the eager to play the game. The image in the background shows a man on his own which can be something similar to solidarity or loneliness. The game's ethnicity is varied as there are a mixture of races in it.

Institution:
The makers of The Last of Us are one of the best game makers in the world right now. They are the same company that made Uncharted 3 which also hit the top charts. The game company that created the Last of Us is none other than Naughty Dog. The game made itself to the top of the gaming charts if not the first. This is because of the tremendous emotion in putted in the game of the relationship between the hero and the girl, as they escape hordes of zombies/bandits to reach the Fireflies.

Audience:
This game would most likely target a mixed gender, probably more boys then girls, with a percentage of 60% boys and 40% girls. The game will appeal to mostly 14 year old's up to late twenties or early thirties, due to the emotion and action put into the Last of Us. This game is aimed at lower middle to upper middle class as it has a good storyline.

Representation:
The original design makes people wonder what is going in this game, what's the link between that young girl and the mysterious looking man? It is notable that the eye colour of the two protagonists are completely different and there looks are not similar either, meaning they are not blood related. The title is represented in a way which makes the audience think, why is the video game called the Last of Us and what does that meaning have to do with the game? As it is unusual for a normal video game.
